'Affordable Housing' Has a Pretty Broad Definition

In the San Francisco Business Times story, 'Affordable housing' has a pretty broad definition. Here are some of the most common types, the article explains some of the key housing types and their respective roles in helping address homelessness and affordability from inclusionary zoning and low-income units to middle-income housing, safe parking programs, safe sleeping villages, navigation centers, permanent supportive housing, and public housing.

Affordable housing runs the gamut. The term encompasses everything from temporary refuge for the unhoused to homes for middle-income families priced out of an expensive residential market.

Efforts to expand on many parts of that spectrum have gained steam in recent years as the Bay Area and other parts of the country continue to grapple with a housing crisis, which the pandemic has only exacerbated. In September, for instance, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation—Senate Bills 9 and 10—that effectively ends single-family zoning in California to spur housing density in neighborhoods and near transit and urban infill sites.
