Affordable housing runs the gamut. The term encompasses everything from temporary refuge for the unhoused to homes for middle-income families priced out of an expensive residential market.
Efforts to expand on many parts of that spectrum have gained steam in recent years as the Bay Area and other parts of the country continue to grapple with a housing crisis, which the pandemic has only exacerbated. In September, for instance, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation—Senate Bills 9 and 10—that effectively ends single-family zoning in California to spur housing density in neighborhoods and near transit and urban infill sites.
