Session Title:
Transforming Land Banks Into Housing Solutions

Session Description:
Finding developable land in California is challenging, especially locations with the necessary services to promote the right kind of development. As the pressure grows, cities, public agencies, and developers are creatively re-evaluating their resources to identify more land for housing. While the sizes, availability, and types of these large, underutilized land areas – known as "land banks" – differ between jurisdictions, each presents a valuable opportunity to provide more housing with high-quality and equitable development. Land banks, where available, are generally located within infill locations, surrounded by services and infrastructure.

A panel comprised of city staff, transit agency officials and designers will discuss their efforts, challenges and successes in transforming underutilized assets into potential new housing solutions. Discussions will cover policy, outreach, and design, providing a holistic view of the process and outcomes. The audience will learn from the panel's successful and unsuccessful examples, including successes that may be replicable in other areas. For our cities to continue to be at the forefront, we must manage and solve the housing issue.
