As one of a dozen affordable housing projects supported by the City in its historic commitment to delivering affordable housing, Alum Rock is located within the Alum Rock Village plan and smartly designed for an area of low-rise retail and fast food restaurants. The new seven-story, mixed-use building replaces approximately 8,000 square feet of single-story, multi-tenant neighborhood-serving commercial retail and surface parking. The proximity to a bus rapid transit station located directly across the street (less than 200 feet away), provides convenient transportation and mobility for residents. This, along with 99 long-term bicycle storage spaces for residents, reduces the parking requirement to 0.4 ratio.
Alum Rock will provide affordable, mixed-income housing to serve multiple levels of affordability within this neighborhood of greater San Jose. Forty-two of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless with 14 reserved for Rapid Rehousing (RRH) and 29 reserved for Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). The unit mix will include 35 studios, eight one-bedroom, 22 two-bedroom, and 22 three-bedroom units. In addition to onsite services and 24/7 security for residents, two onsite property manager units are also provided.
Parking is accommodated on the ground level, adjoining 3,000 square feet of commercial space and a residents lobby area. A community courtyard amenity is located on the second level adjacent to social services and offices. On the fourth level, over 4,000 square feet of community open space and gardens are adjacent to a large community room for the residents.
